A teenager is under arrest, facing multiple charges following a shooting incident.
Utica Police Department (UPD) officers were called to the 900 block of Saratoga Street in Utica, New York at approximately 6:10 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 after receiving a call about shots being fired in the area .
When police arrived, they said they found several spent shell casings and a 9mm cartridge on the street.
According to a written statement from the UPD, the results of the preliminary investigation revealed “that a man had cycled northbound on Saratoga (street) and [allegedly] began firing numerous bullets at two individuals who were walking in front of him near Court (Street). Following this, the man then fled on a bicycle. Fortunately, no one was hit during this exchange.”
Police shared the description and possible escape route with other officers and they were later able to identify the male suspect from surveillance video in the area. A photo of the suspect was later shared across the agency.
On Thursday, September 8, 2022, a patrol officer saw the suspect walking and approached him. The UPD says the suspect, identified as a 17-year-old man whose name will not be released due to his age, was taken into custody without incident.
An investigator from the UPD’s juvenile aid division accused the teenager of the following:
- Second degree criminal possession of a weapon
- Reckless endangerment in the first degree
He is due to answer the charges in court at a later date.
No physical injuries were reported as a result of the shooting incident or the arrest.
