Australia to rename the island to honor Queen Elizabeth on her Platinum Jubilee: PM

Canberra [Australia], January 1 (ANI / Sputnik): Australia to rename Aspen Island on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra as part of national and community events in June 2022 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the British throne Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Saturday.
“Seventy years of service is a truly immense achievement, and we are proud to join with other Commonwealth nations in celebrating this milestone … Aspen Island in Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, home of the National Carillon, will be renamed Queen Elizabeth II’s Island at a special event in June 2022, “Morrison said in a statement posted on his website.

According to Morrison, the celebrations will include the opening of new Queen Elizabeth Water Gardens, lighting of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon in Canberra, the release of commemorative stamps and coins, and lighting of landmarks across Australia.
In six weeks, on February 6, 2022, Elizabeth II will have reigned for 70 years. In her Christmas message, the Queen said she hoped to become the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee – 70 years on the throne – in 2022. (ANI / Sputnik)
