Text description provided by the architects. On the southern outskirts of the site stood a beautiful and ancient Raintree which influenced the spatial arrangement of this 4 bedroom house in Chennai. The tree, with its sculptural roots and giant canopy, was a key driver in determining the layout and design of the house. We wanted the tree to be omnipresent, so we created the entrance courtyard around its roots and positioned the living room so as to have a direct view of it. The main compound wall on the street was designed with some cutouts to accommodate some of its branches and roots.

The L-shaped plan of the house has a strong north-south axis with the living room assuming a central lodge-like location with nature views on both sides. The south opening of the living room frames the giant Raintree while its north opens completely to a linear Koi pond and garden. A series of 4 sliding doors come together at one end revealing the Koi pond and garden and dissolving the threshold between indoor and outdoor living space. The strategic orientation also promotes cross ventilation and south to north breezes, keeping the living room cool during the intense Chennai summers.

The flow of public spaces on the ground floor includes the living room, dining room, family, kitchen, office and a guest bedroom. The family room spills out into a large veranda that borders the koi pond and the north garden. The upper level of the house includes the master bedroom, an open family space as well as two children’s bedrooms, each with a view of the tree canopy to the south or the garden to the north. The materiality of the house has large expanses of polished gray kota stone as the flooring is offset with walnut wood in some rooms. Accent cast concrete walls in the master bedroom and stairwell wall complete the material language.

We wanted to enhance the interiors with certain colors that would contrast well with the muted gray hull. We have therefore used Garnet and Ocher extensively in upholstery and accessories. Most of the original rugs are hand woven in silk Saree, the paintings are in oil and acrylic by contemporary Indian artists Rathin Burman, GR Iranna, C Douglas, Mahmud Husain etc., and some antiques come from the old town of Kochi. Decorative lighting serves as a focal point in the home and comes from European brands LZF, Marketset and Louis Poulsen. The furniture was largely customized by Khosla Associates.
